Mary Brown Margison 1892 - 1946



Mary Brown was born 20 January 1892 in Stacyville, Iowa. Her parents are Heinrich (Henry) Braun (Brown) and Christine Schillinger. Mary was 4th child of 6 children.

Mary is listed on the 1895 Iowa State Census with her family. Her father, Henry's occupation is Farmer. All of the children list birthplace as Mitchell Co., Iowa.


Her mother died on 29 May 1898. Leaving 6 small children. Mary was 6 years old at the time. My mother in law one time told me that Christine killed herself. I have not been able to verify this. She is buried in the Visitation Cemetery in Stacyville, Iowa.

Mary is listed on the 1900 Federal Census living with her father in Medina, Minnesota. Included in the family is a servant Tracy Hutter. Henry marries Theresa (Tracy) before 1905. Children listed on the 1900 Federal Census are Bernard age 14, Joseph age 12, Paul age 10, Mary age 8; Carrie age 6 and Martha age 3.


Mary and her brother Paul are listed in the 1910 Federal Census living with Joseph Lanz. Mary's occupation is servant and her brother laborer. Living in Beotia, Spink, South Dakota.

  Mary Brown and Bert Margison were married on 23 July 1910 in Conde, South Dakota. They most likely meet while Bert was working for his father who owned threshing machines.

 


Bert and Mary Margison lived in Crown Point, Indiana. They had 4 children:

The Margison Family is listed in the 1920 Federal Census living at 200 Goldsborough St., Crown Point, Indiana. Bert's occupation is Driver, Bus Line. Children listed are Harold age 8, Mildred age 7, Evelyn age 4 and Lorraine age 0.
Mary and her family are listed in the 1930 Federal Census living at 302 Goldsborough St., Crown Point, Indiana.They own home, value $3500.  Bert's occupation is Merchant, Retail Grocery Store. Children listed are Harold age 18, Mildred age 17, Evelyn age 15 and Lorraine age 10.



Bert and Mary's son Harold drowned in Fancher Lake in Crown Point, Indiana on 7 June 1933. My mother-in-law told me that her mother grieve for Harold until she died.

In the 1940 United States Federal Census, Bert and Mary are listed as living 302 Goldsborough St., Crown Point. They own the home, value $4000. Bert's occupation is Proprietor, Retail Grocery Store. Children listed are Evelyn age 24 occupation Typist and Lorraine age 21. Also living with them is Richard Madsen as a lodger. Evelyn and Richard were married after 1940 and then divorced.



Mary died 24 April  1946 in Gary Indiana from a Cerebral Hemorrhage.



 Mrs. Bert Margison Fatally Stricken In Home Sunday
Death in Mercy Hospital Follows Cerbral Hemorrhage
   The city has lost another of its admirable women in the death of Mary Brown Margison, 54, wife of Bert Margison, city councilman, and mother of Mrs. George Brant of Highland, Miss Evelyn of Chicago and Mrs. Robert Bunker of Crown Point. Her passing came Sunday night in Mercy hospital, where she had been taken earlier in the day after what the family had thought was restful sleep proved to be a state of coma induced by a cerebral hemorrhage.
  Born January 20, 1892 in Iowa. Mrs. Margison and her husband have been residents of Crown Point for 30 years. Helpful always to her husband in this grocery business, from which he recently retired, she found time, too, to be a devoted mother. She was actively interested in the Auxiliary unit of the local post of The American Legion and expressed her friendly interest in people. In membership in several social clubs.
  Survivors with her husband, daughters and grandchildren are three brothers, Joseph Brown, Ben Brown of Minneapolis and Paul Brown of Conde, South Dakota.
  Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.J. Bailey in Linton's chapel at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Pall bearers included Bruce Tipon, Stanley Barr, Cordia Cadwell, Henry Mann, Henry Menching, Clayton Pierce, Burial was made, in Maplewood cemetery.
